Start with summer weekends.
Relay working draft. This version is for a 2022 Citroën Relay 35 BlueHDi 140 manual Enterprise L2H2 diesel FWD panel van and two adults on summer campsite weekends. The budget uses the same provisional benchmark allowances as the Transit draft, not measured Relay quantities or a conversion quote. Revise each category after measuring and obtaining prices. Portable equipment references are candidates to check, not a fitted kit. Quantities, finished fit, structural attachments and specialist work remain subject to review.

Other tools and checks
What this simple build includes
Explore a lengthways bed with storage below, a compact preparation unit, with door access still to check. Start with portable water, a passive coolbox and charging for phones and lights.
For this example, leave a shower, fixed gas, indoor cooking, space heating, solar and a compressor fridge out of the first version. Summer travel still requires suitable ventilation and bedding.
Why a lengthways bed?
The dealer lists a maximum bare load width of 1,870 mm. That is less than the 2,000 mm length of our candidate mattress, before lining or wall curvature. A crosswise 2 m bed is therefore not assumed to fit.
A 2,000 × 1,320 mm lengthways sleeping space is a concept to measure and mock up. It does not prove the bed frame, support, aisle or kitchen will fit.
What could wait until later?
Decorative finishes, permanent refrigeration and a larger power system. Decide where future equipment would go before closing service access or lining the van.
1. Choose your van sizeStart with model dimensions; refine later if you wish.To do
Start with your van’s approximate size
2022 Citroën Relay 35 BlueHDi 140 manual Enterprise L2H2 diesel FWD panel van
These model dimensions are enough to start exploring a rough layout. You can refine them later.
| Load length at floor | 3.12 m |

| Maximum load width | 1.87 m |
| Load height | 1.93 m |
| Between wheel arches | 1.42 m |

Check the actual van before buying or cutting materials. Lining, wheel arches and wall shapes reduce usable space; catalogue dimensions are approximate planning references.
Model dimensions and source
Citroën manufacturer brochure, prices effective March 2022; supplier-hosted copy. Interior-dimension table at PDF page 47. L2H2 load length at floor 3,120 mm; mid-height with bulkhead 2,914 mm; maximum width 1,870 mm; wheel-arch gap 1,422 mm; height 1,932 mm. A floor-length reference is not furniture-height clearance.
Exact reference millimetres: length 3120, width 1870, height 1932, arch gap 1422. These have not been recorded as your measurements.
Refine with my measurements (optional)
How to take the measurements — beginner checklist
- Confirm the exact van version above. Take a tape measure, paper, pencil and cardboard; record everything in millimetres.
- Sketch the floor from above. Measure its length along both sides and the centre, then width at the front, middle and rear. Record the narrowest usable points and any differences in your floor notes.
- Draw around wheel arches, door steps and openings. Record their positions, widths, lengths and heights. Keep door movement, service access and exits clear.
- At the proposed bed and kitchen heights, measure again. Walls curve: a floor-level width does not establish bed-level space. Try the furniture outlines with cardboard.
- Measure height above the proposed finished floor at several points. If layers are not installed, record the current bare measurement and proposed layer thicknesses separately; do not guess the finished size.
- For lining, sketch and measure each wall and ceiling section separately. Add length × height in metres for each rectangle. Record openings, ribs and overlaps so the layout can be checked before ordering.
- Repeat the measurements and label the sketch with the date. Record the usable values below and detailed sketches or notes in the build areas. Resolve inconsistent readings before transferring quantities to a buying list.
Take these measurements before buying fitted items. Record the usable space at the height where the furniture will sit, allowing for insulation, lining and the floor.
Measure at furniture height, too. The available length can change above the floor. Check the bed and preparation-unit space at their intended heights.

2. Try a simple layoutTest the bed and kitchen space with cardboard. To do
Start a measured materials list →
Which Relay layout feels right for you?
Three starting ideas for two adults. Compare the trade-offs, then choose one to explore below.
Fixed rear bed
Illustrated concepts, not construction plans. All three use a 2,000 × 1,320 mm sleeping footprint. Day benches are for parked use only. Supports, mechanisms, door access, ventilation, wheel arches and travel restraints need their own design. Changing layout does not reprice your build or verify the existing shopping list.
Front / cab outside this rectangle
Rear of van
Footprint concept only. The rectangle omits wheel arches, wall curves, bulkhead shape, door positions and fixings. It is not a vehicle drawing or proof of fit.Try usable layout dimensions
Use measured usable space at the furniture heights, after allowing for insulation and lining. The furniture sizes remain fixed; we only check rectangular boundaries and overlap.
This copies your usable length and width at bed height into the concept rectangle. Check the width at the preparation unit separately. It does not supply floor measurements for the materials estimator. Record or change my measurements →
Check before choosing this layout
Confirm width at bed height, wheel-arch locations, access to a usable exit, sitting headroom above the mattress, storage access and where the preparation unit meets the sliding door. Bed height and cabinet height have not been specified.
The narrow side gap is not a designed aisle or rear escape route. Furniture restraints, bed supports, material grades and carrying capacity need a reviewed design. No travel seating is added.
Materials and budget for this layout
Start with the materials to investigate below. The amounts are your current category allowances, not new prices for this design. Edit them when you have a better estimate or quote.
Bed structure and storage
Preparation furniture
Still separate: mattress or cushions, general fixings and finishes, delivery and specialist work remain in their existing categories. Check those too. This review does not approve quantities, hardware, supports or travel restraints.
Detailed quantities can wait
Use the materials step when you are ready to record exact specifications, quantities and suppliers. There is no automatic cutting list: furniture heights, supports, openings, mechanisms and material suitability need a reviewed design first.
Open my detailed materials list →This replaces unfinished bed and preparation-furniture category allowances. It does not add a second material basket. Recorded final costs, reserve, mattress, equipment and all other categories remain unchanged.
Original fixed-bed material references
These are the original fixed-bed candidates, not a materials list for the convertible or removable layouts. Recheck supports, mechanisms, quantities and complete costs for your chosen arrangement.
These are material candidates and partial quantities for budgeting, not a construction or cutting schedule. Supplier prices retrieved 28 October 2026; delivery and location availability need checking.

Keep room in the budget
The current draft leaves some budget unallocated, but quantities and quotes are still provisional and could push it over £5,000. Keep the reserve rather than buying optional equipment early.

Previous shortlist options
Earlier water carrier and coolbox choices remain available so saved owned/bought decisions are preserved. Their prices were checked on 28 October, not refreshed. They are alternatives to the new water carrier and cooler, not extra essentials.

Connect these choices to my budget
Review the selected item prices, keep an allowance for missing accessories, then apply category replacements. “Bought” items stay in the build forecast at reference prices until you record the category's actual final cost; owned items cost nothing new. Chairs use the privacy and soft furnishings category. No final spending is recorded here.
This replaces the existing delivery allowance once, not once per item. Check your postcode and supplier baskets. Other missing purchases belong in the relevant category's extra allowance.
5. Plan the materialsUse the tools below once the construction is agreed. To do
Start your measured build list
Work through one area at a time: measure it, agree the construction, then count and price the parts. Notes are a working record, not confirmation that a design has been reviewed.
Floor
Original planning allowance: £200.00
No measured floor outline is confirmed. The material estimator only uses a bounding rectangle.
Measurements needed
- Record the floor outline, wheel arches, door steps and any areas to leave accessible.
- Record the finished floor length and widths at the relevant points; do not reuse width at bed height.
Decisions before quantities
- Agree the floor layers, material specification, joints and support requirements before counting sheets.
Parts to list once the design is agreed
- Floor panel pieces
- Specified layers and finish
- Edging, adhesives or fixings required by the reviewed design
Quantity status: pending. Each eventual part needs its finished size, material/grade, quantity, supplier and delivered price.
Up to 2,000 characters. These notes save with your project backup; they do not automatically change the budget or estimator.Bed and storage
Original planning allowance: £350.00
The 2,000 × 1,320 mm sleeping footprint and two proposed 2,000 × 660 mm panels are concept references, not an approved cutting list.
Measurements needed
- Confirm sleeping length, usable width at mattress height, bed height and sitting headroom.
- Locate wheel arches, access routes and the storage openings you want.
Decisions before quantities
- Review supports, material grades, joints, ventilation and furniture attachments before specifying quantities.
Parts to list once the design is agreed
- Reviewed bed-surface panel pieces
- Frame and support members
- Storage panels and hardware
- Specified fixings, restraints and finish
Quantity status: pending. Each eventual part needs its finished size, material/grade, quantity, supplier and delivered price.
Up to 2,000 characters. These notes save with your project backup; they do not automatically change the budget or estimator.Walls, ceiling and insulation
Original planning allowance: £1,250.00
The £800 insulation and £450 lining figures are allowances. A van-size label does not establish surface area or kit quantity.
Measurements needed
- Measure wall and ceiling areas separately, noting ribs, curves, windows, doors and service access.
- Record which surfaces each chosen material layer will cover.
Decisions before quantities
- Agree the layers, thicknesses, moisture/ventilation approach and access requirements before calculating coverage and offcuts.
Parts to list once the design is agreed
- Specified insulation layers by covered area
- Wall and ceiling panel pieces
- Required trim and installation materials
Quantity status: pending. Each eventual part needs its finished size, material/grade, quantity, supplier and delivered price.
Up to 2,000 characters. These notes save with your project backup; they do not automatically change the budget or estimator.Preparation unit / kitchen
Original planning allowance: £350.00
The 1,000 × 450 mm footprint is a concept only. Cabinet height, construction and full panel sizes are still undecided.
Measurements needed
- Record the chosen footprint and cabinet height at the intended position.
- Check wall shape, door clearance, storage access and usable movement space.
Decisions before quantities
- Agree construction, joints, worktop, access and attachment requirements before generating a panel and hardware list.
Parts to list once the design is agreed
- Cabinet side, base and other panels required by the design
- Worktop piece
- Doors, hinges or drawer hardware if chosen
- Specified attachment materials and finish
Quantity status: pending. Each eventual part needs its finished size, material/grade, quantity, supplier and delivered price.
Up to 2,000 characters. These notes save with your project backup; they do not automatically change the budget or estimator.Next: count and price my parts →
The download includes these prompts and your notes. Sheet, timber and fixing quantities remain pending until the measurements, specification and cutting/design review are ready.
Turn your measurements into a priced parts list
Once you have agreed the construction, record each panel, length, pack or other part. A quantity is the number of buying units: for example, 3 sheets at a price per sheet. Describe finished dimensions, material grade and thickness in the specification. The site totals your entries; it does not design supports or produce a cutting layout.
Need an area and pack estimate first? →
For each area, include all materials and fittings before replacing its budget allowance. Lining here means wall and ceiling lining only; insulation keeps its own budget line. Record supplier and price-check date, with VAT included. Delivery stays in the separate delivery budget. Count each item once: if you include fixings or finishes here, review the separate fixings allowance so they are not also budgeted there.
How much material might I need?
Start with measurements. This optional helper explains area and pack rounding, so a “large van kit” does not become an assumed fit.
Open the materials estimator
Enter the floor’s bounding rectangle. Wheel arches are not deducted. For lining, enter a separately measured total surface area; this tool does not infer it from the van name.
Prices and calculation method
Floor rectangle = length × width. Add your waste percentage, then divide by 2.9768 m² per 2440 × 1220 mm sheet and round up. Price illustration uses Wickes CE2+ softwood 12 mm at £32 per sheet, excluding delivery. This does not establish the correct thickness or structural design.
Optional lining estimate = your measured area plus waste, divided by 5 m² per Dodo Thermo Liner Pro 10 mm roll, rounded up. £89.99 per roll; VAT and delivery conditions require confirmation. This is a single product layer, not a complete insulation kit.
Material estimates are separate illustrations. They do not automatically change the draft budget or add to the basket.
Your plan at a glance
Pause here before buying. Check what you have recorded, what still needs a decision and how the budget looks.
What still needs attention
This is a planning review. Marked steps and entered costs do not confirm a safe design, vehicle fit or readiness to travel. Current supplier prices, physical measurements and relevant specialist reviews still need checking.
